  • The Wheelchair Bound: Well Earned Recognition for DMD

Darius WeemsThough sad events take place around the world, it is the many encouraging success stories of how people overcome their circumstances that touch people’s hearts and motivate them to act.

    Darius Weems: Inspiring Others

In light of that, we have to give a grand "hats off" to the courageous Darius Weems, a teenager who is wheelchair bound due to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and his group of loyal friends who traveled across the country to demonstrate that physical handicap does not mean life stops moving!

His story, and those of many others, is proof and encouragement to the wheelchair community that with resolve and the strength of the community that surrounds you, you can pursue a life that knows no boundaries.

Darius Weems made a 7,000 mile trek across the U.S. in order to personally ask MTV’s “Pimp My Ride” to refurbishment his “ride”- the battered wheelchair he spent each day in and relied upon.  The film follows Darius and his friends on this adventure, showing the hilarious situations they get themselves into, the heartbreaking realities of DMD, and the inspirational firsts he experienced along the way.

Educating Others About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Darius has taken this experience since returning to his home in nearby Athens, Georgia, and used the attention it has garnered to educate people about physical handicap, life in a wheelchair, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  His inspirational feat is a display of courage and determination that resonates with many, and we hope that as people learn about DMD and living with a physical handicap, they will seek to understand and support the wheelchair bound world in a new way.

It is stories like “Darius Goes West” that make Van Products proud to be  a part of the wheelchair community, and excited to offer those with physical handicaps or who are wheelchair bound the ability to keep moving. Questions about getting involved in the handicapped community or interest in learning about the wheelchair vans we offer? Let us know, we’d love to hear from you!

Catering to Your Unique Mobility Needs

We understand that people experience immobility for a wide variety of reasons, and we value relationship building as one of the most important qualities Van Products can offer. For that reason, we seek to cater to you and your individual circumstances, whether you need a temporary wheelchair van during a time of physical rehabilitation, you have a long term disability and need a new wheelchair van to replace one that is outdated, finicky or broken, or you are trying to outfit your home to accommodate someone physically handicapped.

You have our assurance that we value each person and helping them in the best way possible, while getting involved with their community to encourage and engage those relationships.

    Wheelchair Accessibility in the Home

In the home, we have a variety of choices, with everything from seated stair lifts to wheelchair lifts and even those that accommodate scooters. A sense of mobility and security in the home is our top priority. On the road we have the highest quality and most up to date designs of wheelchair vans, both family style and commercial.

Already have a van? Fold out ramps and lowered floors can be a great solution, so let us know where the need is and we’ll customize our services for you.

At Van Products, we focus on offering the best equipment available to enable you to gain as much independence in mobility as possible, and to make a difficult process as easy as possible.  Let us know if you have questions, want to learn more about one of our products or want to get involved with the wheelchair community!

  • Van Products and The Durham Bulls

Durham Bulls LogoAt Van Products, we love to find creative ways to get involved in our community and give mobility back to those who are handicapped by facilitating participation in fun events.

One group we have enjoyed partnering with is the Durham Bulls baseball team.  No summer is complete without a trip to the old ball game, so we have joined with the Durham Bulls to provide tickets for handicapped seats for Van Products customers.

Making Travel Easier for the Wheelchair Bound

People who have purchased wheelchair vans know how much easier they make day to day travel and going to fun activities like sporting events.

At Van Products, our vans aren’t just equipped to accommodate wheelchairs, but were designed with wheelchairs in mind. As far as we’re concerned, Van Products’ role in Raleigh, Wilmington, Fayetteville and throughout the wheelchair community is providing mobility through wheelchair vans, and then offering opportunities to enjoy that freedom at fun events like Durham Bulls games.

We had a great turnout in July as the Bulls turned out a winning month, sweeping Syracuse and giving Charlotte quite a run for their money. Van Products customers from all around town came in to watch the team and we loved hearing their stories and seeing their pictures. It may seem like a small thing to some, but it has proven to be something Van Products and our customers have enjoyed being a part of.

Get Tickets to the Durham Bulls!

We’re looking forward to a great end to the season in August, so connect with us here or on Facebook and join us for a day out on the diamond. If you aren’t a baseball fan, keep your eyes out for some of the other sports teams we partner with like the Carolina Hurricanes!

Get in touch with us and we’ll get you a pair of tickets to one of the Durham Bulls’ home games - we can’t promise a win, but we can promise a fun evening, easy parking and great seats!

  • Spotlight On: The Christopher Reeve Foundation

Dana and Christopher ReeveBuilding a More Livable and Accessible Community

At Van Products, we like to occasionally spotlight other groups within the physically handicapped community, and one that particularly stands out to us is the Christopher Reeve Foundation.

    About the Christopher Reeve Foundation

This organization is invested in bringing together members of the mobility impaired community, both individuals with handicaps as well as others who are a part of their lives, to take part in community centered activities that provide hope and inspiration.

In events throughout the year like the “Best Dad on Wheels” competition and the ADA 20th Anniversary Community Celebration, they encourage people with disabilities to come together and celebrate their lives.

    Honoring Wheelchair-Bound Dads Everywhere

To honor fathers who are in wheelchairs, the Christopher Reeve Foundation has set up a competition that gives children the opportunity to nominate their dads who are living with physical paralysis be awarded the “Best Dad on Wheels” award.

The nomination gives people a chance to recognize the amazing role their dad has played in their life and the obstacles he has overcome to stand out as the best dad on wheels. Another unique event the foundation has taken part in this year is the ADA 20th Anniversary Community Celebration.

Commemorating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

To commemorate the ratification of the Americans with Disabilities Act, they broke the Guinness World Record for having the most wheelchairs in a moving line.  With 193 people in a line of moving wheelchairs, they were proud to celebrate the wheelchair community by almost doubling the previous Guinness World Record and showing how far the community has come in the past 20 years.

This type of community engagement is what Van Products hopes to celebrate as we involve ourselves in the North Carolina wheelchair world, and what we hope to offer with our products and services that aid those who are mobility impaired to move more easily.  Learn more about what we have to offer and the activities we’re a part of, and drop us a line to join in!

  • National Adult Day Services Conference

nadsa-logoVan Products is excited about the National Adult Day Services Conference this August 19 – 21.  The event will be held in Raleigh and is centered on the theme “Get Smart: Strategies for Success in 2010 & Beyond.”

This event will provide a great opportunity to connect with people throughout the mobility impaired community, both those who are physically handicapped and those who are a part of their lives.  There will be chances to learn about upcoming and innovative mobility solutions that can make life more comfortable and accessible, as well as chances to socialize among people with shared interests and values.

    Technology to Improve Mobility

At Van Products, we look forward to hearing about the other people, groups and organizations that are participating in this event from those who attend.

At the Conference, attendees will explore and learn about new technology that improves mobility and simplifies life for those who are physically handicapped, but beyond that there will be a focus on the importance of striking a balanced lifestyle that considers health, safety and happiness, something Van Products values as well.

    Pathway to Person-Centeredness

One of the discussion groups during the event is called the “Pathway to Person-Centeredness” and focuses on this: implement practices that consider what is important to people and what is important for them. In discussions like this throughout each day, people involved in the physically handicapped world will have a chance to share experiences and insights as well as build community.

We think the community in Raleigh and the Triangle and those who rely on our products and services will gain a lot through the upcoming National Adult Day Services Conference.

Van Products is excited to hear about your experience if you attend the conference, so let us know what your favorite part was here on the blog or on our Facebook page.

We see this as an opportunity to educate the social networking communities of what is available for those with mobility impairment. • Giving Mobility Back to the Immobile

When a tragedy strikes that ends up with an individual losing their mobility it is devastating. Once the shock passes then there are many decisions that have to be made and finding an alternate source of mobility such as wheelchairs and transportation is a priority.

    Finding the Best Wheelchair Van

For most people, the first consideration is finding a wheelchair suitable to meet their needs, but mobility extends past that initial solution.  Having the ability to effectively make use of wheelchair transportation that will allow a greater range of travel opens doors and gives freedom in a powerful way.

An example of one of these options is a wheelchair-accessible van, such as the BraunAbility minivans offered by Van Products.  These vans give you the ability to get around with ease, or help a family member who is mobility impaired access the vehicle.  Van Products’ priority is making life affordable for the mobility impaired and as easy and natural as possible; we would be happy to show you these and more options we have available.

    Wheelchair Vans for Rent

For individuals who are recuperating from injuries or surgery and do not need to own a mobility van, we also provide the option of wheelchair van rentals that are specially equipped to accommodate each individual’s needs.  It is our goal that no person whose mobility is restricted should be unable to get out and get busy; whether you are attending a sporting event, a summer cookout or a special occasion, Van Products seeks to help you on your way.

We pride ourselves in being proactive and we believe in promoting the overall well being of our clients, so our goal is to be innovative and engaged in community awareness efforts and events while providing convenient was to help those with mobility impairment have their independence.
