At Van Products, we believe that people with mobility impairments can do anything they set their minds to. For proof, just look at the US Open Wheelchair Championships. Held in early September and presented by Deloitte, the championships featured many notable athletes and were impressive all around.
Expansion
The 2022 US Open Wheelchair Championships looked a bit different than in years past. For one thing, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) made a surprising announcement in the months leading up to the championships. They’d opted to increase the size of the men’s and women’s singles and doubles draws. Furthermore, they announced a brand new addition to the line-up, the US Open Wheelchair Junior Championships. These changes serve as proof that tennis and sports in general are becoming more inclusive.
Excitement
While wheelchair tennis has always been an exciting sport, this year’s US Open had quite a few thrilling moments. For one thing, Diede de Groot, from the Netherlands, won the women’s title and achieved a Grand Slam for the second year in a row. Several wheelchair tennis legends were in attendance, including Esther Vergeer, winner of seven Paralympic gold medals, and Brad Parks, who was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010.
Empowerment
Ths US Open Wheelchair Championships celebrate athletes with disabilities and showcase all that they can do. And, whether you’re a sports fan or an athlete yourself, watching is incredibly empowering. Events like these make it clear that having a mobility impairment doesn’t have to mean losing your freedom and independence.
