Celebrated during the month of May, National Mobility Awareness Month is an initiative supported by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) along with mobility equipment dealers, manufacturers and driver rehabilitation specialists in the United States and Canada looking to bring awareness and also celebrate the way in which people with disabilities persevere towards achieving an independent life.
Statistics suggest that there are about 54 million people living with disabilities in the United States alone, where one in five elderly people are dealing with severe mobility issues. Since 2012, and driven by the theme “Life Moving Forward”, this international campaign is meant to highlight and celebrate the ways in which people with disabilities work towards overcoming their physical challenges, while drawing attention to the many mobility solutions available in order to provide them with greater independence and quality of life.
As a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding the access to mobility products, the NMEDA along with its members has created the Local Hero Contest to be celebrated during National Mobility Awareness Month in which individuals, veterans, seniors with disabilities, their families, caregivers and every person striving for an active, fulfilling and independent life are encouraged to participate for the chance to win a brand new wheelchair accessible vehicle customized to their needs.
In this event, the public is encouraged to nominate and vote for Local Heroes out of which one caregiver, one senior and one individual with inspiring stories are selected and awarded with the price.
A Local Hero is a person who volunteers, educates, advocates, achieves and perseveres to accomplish life without limits, not just for themselves, but for others around them living with mobility impairments.
