Do you provide or help provide care for a spouse, aging parent, or loved one? If so, then you should know that November is National Family Caregivers Month, a month designed to honor people like you and the love and care you provide.
This holiday first got its start in 2000. It was designed to celebrate the more than 40 million family caregivers in the United States today. If you’re one of them, make sure you do something nice for yourself this month. After all, you do nice things for others every day!
Spend Time with Friends
Many caregivers struggle with social isolation. The care they provide often takes up so much of their time that they don’t get the fun, socialization, and downtime they deserve.
If this applies to you, set a goal this month that you will get out and do something you enjoy with people you love. Whether it’s a simple lunch with friends, seeing a movie with your spouse, or throwing a big party to celebrate you and other dedicated caregivers in your life, remember that you deserve some time to cut loose and have fun.
Treat Yourself
As a caregiver, you are always there for others, which is great. But, you deserve to take some time for yourself as well.
At least one day this month, pamper yourself and have some true “you time” all on your own. Whether you get a massage, go out for a delicious dinner, or just sit on the couch and binge watch your favorite shows, you deserve a day that’s all about you. If you clue your family and friends into the fact that it’s National Family Caregivers month, they might even take over your duties for a day or so to give you some much needed and well-deserved downtime.
Take Advantage of Available Resources
Did you know that there are many good resources in your community that are designed to help caregivers just like you?
This month for caregivers is the perfect time to look into options and resources to make your life better. Maybe you want to join a support group for caregivers, to take advantage of adult daycare services for your loved one, or to hire someone to help you or fill in for you on certain days.
Whatever the case may be, take some time this month to assess your overall health and happiness. Then, look into resources and options that can make your life easier. Remember, even though you spend your time caring for others, it’s important to care for yourself too.
