Back in 2008, International Wheelchair Day was started by Steve Wilkinson, a man born with Spina Bifida who has been using a wheelchair for most of his life. Since its humble beginnings, International Wheelchair Day has grown to become a global event, with celebrations being held throughout North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.
While many of us know a family member, friend, or colleague, who has benefited from the use of a wheelchair, it’s important to remember that many people still lack access to a wheelchair. And, while we have made great strides, there is still a long way to go when it comes to making the world a more wheelchair accessible place.
According to his website, Steve founded International Wheelchair Day with 3 main goals:
- To enable wheelchair users to celebrate the positive impact a wheelchair has in their lives.
- To celebrate the great work of the many millions of people who provide wheelchairs, who provide support and care for wheelchair users and who make the World a better and more accessible place for people with mobility issues.
- To acknowledge and react constructively to the fact there are many tens of millions of people in the World who need a wheelchair, but are unable to acquire one.
This March 1st, 2020 all of us here at Van Products would like to welcome you to join us in celebrating International Wheelchair Day. We have been working to provide the highest quality mobility solutions for everyone in the North Carolina community and beyond for 46 years. Throughout that time, we have met so many great people and seen the amazing things that can be accomplished when everyone is able to live a more mobile life. We hope you’ll continue to be by our side and work with us to accomplish the goals of international wheelchair day.
