Building a More Livable and Accessible Community
At Van Products, we like to occasionally spotlight other groups within the physically handicapped community, and one that particularly stands out to us is the Christopher Reeve Foundation.
About the Christopher Reeve Foundation
This organization is invested in bringing together members of the mobility impaired community, both individuals with handicaps as well as others who are a part of their lives, to take part in community centered activities that provide hope and inspiration.
In events throughout the year like the “Best Dad on Wheels” competition and the ADA 20th Anniversary Community Celebration, they encourage people with disabilities to come together and celebrate their lives.
Honoring Wheelchair-Bound Dads Everywhere
To honor fathers who are in wheelchairs, the Christopher Reeve Foundation has set up a competition that gives children the opportunity to nominate their dads who are living with physical paralysis be awarded the “Best Dad on Wheels” award.
The nomination gives people a chance to recognize the amazing role their dad has played in their life and the obstacles he has overcome to stand out as the best dad on wheels. Another unique event the foundation has taken part in this year is the ADA 20th Anniversary Community Celebration.
Commemorating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
To commemorate the ratification of the Americans with Disabilities Act, they broke the Guinness World Record for having the most wheelchairs in a moving line. With 193 people in a line of moving wheelchairs, they were proud to celebrate the wheelchair community by almost doubling the previous Guinness World Record and showing how far the community has come in the past 20 years.
This type of community engagement is what Van Products hopes to celebrate as we involve ourselves in the North Carolina wheelchair world, and what we hope to offer with our products and services that aid those who are mobility impaired to move more easily. Learn more about what we have to offer and the activities we’re a part of, and drop us a line to join in!
