Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most severe form of muscular dystrophy that rapidly weakens an individual’s back, shoulder, arm and leg muscles. This form occurs when there is a problem with the gene that makes dystrophin, without this protein the muscles will quickly begin to break down and the individual becomes very weak. Most often, these symptoms will begin around age 5 and steadily increase until the individual is required to be in a wheelchair, as we highlighted in our Darius Goes West blog a few months ago.
Cure Duchenne is a charity that was co-founded 7 years ago by Debra Miller and her father, Paul. Miller’s son was diagnosed with the disease in 2003 and since then Debra and Paul are confident that they will be able to communicate the need for awareness and funding for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Debra Miller believes that “our confidence emanates from a strong Christian faith and a belief that God presents us with opportunities to help other people.
When we got our son’s diagnosis, the pain was unbelievable. We always had faith, but we never truly knew how much we would have to rely on God. Our hope is that everyone confronted with this devastating news will receive the constant comfort that our faith has brought us. We respect and welcome people of all faiths and beliefs to our organization. Saving these boys and sharing our faith has become our life’s work.”
In December, Cadillac and NFL superstar, Clay Matthews began a campaign through Charity Buzz that includes a series of commercials, which will last until the Super Bowl on February 6th. Don Butler, Vice President for Cadillac marketing, stated that “Cure Duchenne has exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit. Duchenne is a devastating muscle disease in children, and we hope to raise awareness and join in the fight.”
The Miller family is an inspiration to us at Van Products. Due to the generosity of many individuals, Cure Duchenne research is quickly progressing and last year, the charity donated $1 million to research, in hopes to make a difference. Let us know how we can help you by sending us a note.
